24 February 2017
We’re in the thick of our annual grape harvest on Thelema and Sutherland farms, with the majority of our white varietals happily fermenting in tank or barrel. The grapes are healthy, and winemaker Rudi says he is very optimistic about the quality coming in. The extremely dry growing season has resulted in smaller berries and overall bunch size across all the varietals thus far. However, on the up side, this translates to good concentration of flavours and aromas in the 2017 wines.
Not only are we excited about the harvest, but the Thelema family welcomed its newest member on the 4th of January. Thomas and Elaine welcomed little Sarah Rose Webb into the world and both parents (and grandparents) couldn’t be prouder.
GYLES’ PICK OF THE BUNCH
I asked Gyles which wine he opens after a long, hot day in the vineyards during the strenuous harvest season and he quickly replied that it would be a glass of Sutherland Chardonnay 2015. Viewed as one of the top showing wines at the recent Chardonnay Colloquium held in Elgin, we have all been looking forward to the release of the 2015 vintage. This vintage shows wonderful citrus fruit expression, integrated toasty oak and is a great follow on vintage to the internationally awarded 2013 and 2014.
NEW RELEASE: SUTHERLAND CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013
Be sure to try the newest addition to the Sutherland portfolio. The Sutherland Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully crafted wine from our cool-climate vineyards in Elgin. Aged for 18 months in French Oak, the wine shows abundant cassis fruit, enticing toasted oak and lovely elegance and balance. The final blend has a dollop of Petit Verdot included to lift the berry fruit character and add a touch of sweet spice on the finish.
