Spring Time in the Winelands
31 August 2016
We all have a specific trigger at the end of a long, cold winter that signals the start of spring in our minds. On Thelema estate, the pungent smell of the flowering jasmine as you drive onto the farm conjures up memories of sipping ice cold Thelema Muscat de Frontignan while relaxing next to the swimming pool. The warmer weather means the vines’ root systems have become active again and the dormant vines have started to sprout wooly buds. The good rains we had in July and August have filled our irrigation dam to the brim, so we are well prepared for the upcoming growing season.
In the winery, Rudi and the team are set to start emptying the 1500 odd barrels of red wine from the 2015 harvest. This vintage is viewed as one of the best in years across the cultivar spectrum, so we are incredibly excited about the potential of our red wines from the 2015 harvest.
First of the list of much anticipated wines is the new vintage of our Thelema Methode Cap Classique. The 2013 vintage is a delicious Brut, comprising of a 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot noir blend that spent 32 months of the lees before disgorgement. This important step in the production of a bottle-fermented and aged sparkling wine is when the sediment is frozen and removed through the natural pressure in the bottle, giving the winemakers the opportunity to add a small amount of dosage to each bottle before it is closed with the characteristic cork and wire hood. Unfortunately, the volumes we produce of this bubbly is so limited, most of this wine will be consumed by the end of the upcoming festive season!
Another small production wine now available is the much loved Thelema Merlot Reserve 2013. This barrel selection of Thelema’s best Merlot is aged in 100% new oak barrels and shows a wonderful richness and purity on the palate.
THELEMA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012 – PRE RELEASE
As a special offer to our newsletter subscribers, we have made the release of the 2012 vintage of Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon available online only. The 2012 vintage was awarded a 92 point rating by UK Wine Master, Tim Atkins, as well as a spot in the Top 10 of the annual Cabernet Sauvignon Report (previously the Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report). Judges described the wine as showing “Cassis, a hint of mint plus chocolate and a little earthiness. Rich and full on the palate with fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins, the finish long and savoury.”
A COOL ADDITION TO OUR PORTFOLIO
The Thelema team were thrilled when Woolworths, one of South Africa’s favourite retail brands, approached us with the idea of collaborating on two Woolworths Reserve wines. These wines, blended in partnership with Woolworths’ Allan Mullins, were produced from fruit grown on our coastal farm, Sutherland Vineyards in Elgin, and labelled as the Thelema Cool Climate Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 and Sauvignon Blanc 2016. Look out for these wines on the shelves in select stores or visit woolworths.co.za.
